Danville, Pennsylvania

The Borough of Danville is located along the Susquehanna River in Montour County, Pennsylvania. This strategic locale was influential in the settlement of the area when William Montgomery first founded it as a trading post in the late 1700's. The burgeoning area, named for Montgomery's son Daniel, began to prosper in the mid 1800's when iron was discovered, making way for iron mills and manufacturing for the rail industry.

Economy
Danville's economy is still based on manufacturing and industry, with large corporations currently in operation. However, the medical services industry also found a niche in the community with the opening of the Geisinger Medical Center in 1915. More than two million people in 31 counties are served by this facility, distinguished as one of the "Best Hospitals in America." Since its foundation, the medical center has grown to employ 7,000 and encompasses a children's hospital, women's hospital, co-dependency treatment facility, Rondald McDonald House, and primary care offices, among others.

Leisure & Recreation
Aside from its tremendous sense of community and local charm, visitors are drawn to Danville and its variety of attractions. The downtown historic district, like many across the country, has been revitalized and continues to lure sightseers with its 19th century architecture and hometown appeal.

Annual festivals and street fairs provide visitors with a more regionalized view of the area. The Iron Heritage Festival, held in July, has emerged as the community's premier event and celebrates Danville's Iron Era, when it was the largest producer of iron in the world.

The Montour Preserve is a popular destination in the Danville area for outdoor activities. This natural area includes the Chillisquaque Lake, hiking trails, a fossil exploration pit and picnic pavilions, while the Visitor's Center displays nature, wildlife and history exhibits. Families and sportsmen visit the preserve year-round to boat, hike, picnic, and relax. Ice fishing is common in the coldest months.

Great Dane Trailers in Danville
The Danville Great Dane manufacturing plant, with nearly 300 team members, is one of the largest employers in Montour County. The 150,000 square foot facility houses a fabrication department and assembly line, with the capacity to produce more than 400 trailers each month. The Danville plant has been part of the Great Dane family since December of 2001
