It is important to understand that moisture, road debris and winter road traction and de-icing materials will "sandblast" the understructure of trailers. Once the protective coatings are abraded, if only to a minor degree, it will expose these areas to the caustic environment of the road salts and other de-icing materials as well as allow dirt and road debris to accumulate directly on the vulnerable substrate.
If these very corrosive materials such as magnesium chloride, which is being used extensively on roads as a deicer, are not washed away frequently you can expect surface rust and even more serious corrosion to form in the suspension and buckplate areas in the short term.
Great Dane encourages you to frequently clean all trailers with a properly mixed ration of soap and fresh water regardless of the weather. Cleaning should be accomplished with a low to mild pressure application to assure against lifting fresh/new coatings at abraded areas. Thorough rinsing is required to complete this preventive step.
This appearance maintenance practice will control early rusting concerns along with making the trailer look good to you and your customers. |
